This project is a design initiative that pays respect to the cycle of Japan’s forests and calls for a rethinking of how we engage with them. From the villages, the mountains appear lush and green, seemingly pristine. Yet in reality, around 70% of them are man-made forests planted by human hands.
In the past, these forests provided essential fuel for daily life. But as petroleum and electricity replaced wood as energy sources, these trees were gradually forgotten. With fewer people working in the mountains, thinning and pruning have been abandoned. As a result, trees grown in shaded, nutrient-poor soil have declined in value, while weakened ground now sends nutrient-deficient water into the sea—leaving marine life struggling as well. This is the true meaning of the famous phrase, “The sea is the lover of the mountains.” Sadly, it reflects the current state of Japan’s forests.
It is important to understand that Japanese forests require cycles of cutting and replanting to stay healthy. Forest destruction is unacceptable in places like the Amazon, where virgin forests exist—but in Japan’s case, sustainable forestry is essential.
My proposal is a message that goes beyond words: a rose crafted from shavings of domestic cedar. This design serves as a quiet yet powerful call to show love and care for Japan’s forests, raising awareness of nature’s cycles and the need to preserve them.
このプロジェクトは、日本の山林の循環に敬意を払い、再考を促すデザインへの取り組みです。里から望む山々は緑豊かで一見美しくみえます。しかし、それは原生林でなく、実際にはその７割が人の手によって植えられた人工林です。かつて山々は生活の燃料として重宝されましたが、時代が変わり、燃料が石油や電気に取って代わり、これらの木々は忘れ去られています。その結果、山での仕事が減少し、間伐や枝打ちが行われなくなりました。この放置された環境では、日照不足と栄養不足の土壌で成長した木々は商品価値が低下し、地盤も弱まり、栄養のない水が海へ流れ、海の生き物たちは栄養不足の水になや増されています。これが”海は山の恋人”という有名なメッセージの意味で、悲しいですがこれが今日の日本の山林の現状です。日本の山の木は切って植えての繰り返しが必要です。森林伐採をしてはいけないのは、アマゾンとかそういう原生林のところです。
私が提案するのは、この問題に対する言葉を超えたメッセージ。国産杉の木のかんな屑で作られた薔薇です。このデザインは、山林に対する愛と注意を促す静かながらも強力な呼びかけであり、日本の自然とその維持に対する意識を高めることを目指しています。
