My project “Shoes from the Land of the Gods”—a pair of baby’s first-step shoes crafted from Japanese washi—was featured in the renowned UK design publication PHAIDON WA.

The shoes are made with Sekishu washi from Shimane Prefecture, a paper whose entire production process—from cultivating kōzo (mulberry) to papermaking—has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Using this remarkable washi, I designed a DIY kit for baby’s first step shoes, celebrating the moment a child takes their very first steps.

Sekishu washi is produced through a fully local, sustainable process with no imported materials, resulting in minimal CO₂ emissions. This truly embodies an organic aesthetic. The moccasin-style shoes are hand-assembled using washi thread, reflecting Japanese aesthetics while commemorating a baby’s symbolic first steps into the world.

Awarded the Grand Prize at the Traditional Crafts Forum Exhibition 2012, this project is available through Sekishu Hanshi – Kawahira, a producer and distributor of washi.

イギリスの著名なデザイン書籍PHAIDON”WA”に、日本の神秘から生まれた「神の国から紙の靴」が取り上げられました。島根県の石州和紙、原材料の楮の栽培から紙漉きに至るまの製造過程全てがユネスコ無形文化遺産に指定されています。その素晴らしい和紙で作る赤ちゃんの初めて歩く記念のファーストステップシューズ・キットをデザインしました。石州和紙は、原材料の楮の栽培から紙漉きに至るまで、地元で完結する持続可能なプロセスを経ています。楮の輸入がない、このCO2排出量が少ない製法は、真にオーガニックな美学を体現しています。手作りで組み立てられるこのモカシン風ファーストステップシューズは、和紙製の糸を使い、赤ちゃんがこの世に足を踏み入れる記念すべき瞬間を、日本の美意識を反映したデザインで彩ります。2012年の伝統工芸フォーラム展でグランプリを受賞したこのプロジェクトは、石州半紙・和紙製造販売「かわひら」でお求めいただけます。
